About the Work:

The series features the iconic old shophouses in Singapore which are appreciated for our Singaporean heritage and beautiful architecture. They exude a deep sense of nostalgia and connection for the locals. The once-dilapidated structures had to undergo urban renewal and restoration, a move the government deemed necessary to preserve our cultural heritage during the rise of urbanisation and modernisation. As a result, it is a common sight to see old historical buildings juxtaposed with high rise skyscrapers. Singapore is known to be a garden city since greenery is evidently everywhere even amidst the concrete jungle.  "Coexistence" came to be the title for these two reasons, whereby the old and the new, and the natural and man-made environment contrast and compliment each other on our lands.
