Chia Chor Hua

Singaporean artist Chia Chor Hua

Singapore-born artist Chia Chor Hua’s (b. 1950) passion for the arts had been cultivated since his childhood and in primary school. However, due to financial difficulties within his family, he was only able to pursue it in earnest in 1997 and has since been painting for over two decades. To sharpen his skills, Chia regularly attended courses conducted by the local art colleges. In 2017, Chia became a full-time artist after retiring from his 40-year commitment to the Civil Service.

Elevation (Series 2) | Oil on Linen | 80cm × 100cm

Chia’s style bears a distinct trait – bold strokes with intense colours that pulsate with an afterglow. Coupled with his emotions, conscious, and subconscious thoughts, these strokes are layered over one another to emphasise their values whilst developing visual perspectives. Most of his artworks were influenced and inspired by the experience and knowledge gained through many years of living in the kampong (village). The themes and topics of his works were usually associated with traditions, beliefs, and daily activities.

Chor Hua has had his artworks exhibited in Singapore and other countries like Indonesia, USA, China, and Philippines, thus earning him many awards and recognitions both locally and internationally.
